Swiss woodcarvings

The art of woodcarving has a long tradition in Switzerland. Throughout the country, countless historic buildings, furniture and household items bear witness to the artistic skills of past carvers. The traditional art of Swiss woodcarving most likely developed as a way for mountain farmers to pass the time during long winter evenings. The proud results of these efforts evolved into the more skilful carvings of master craftsmen, whose works such as carved choir stalls and church statues are much admired cultural assets today.
